Proper Disposal of Medications

Did you know that discarded medications can end up in our groundwater? Also most wastewater treatment plants cannot completely deactivate many of the chemical compounds in these discarded medications. Please help keep our environment safe by properly disposing medications.

Guidelines for proper disposal of medications:

  • Do NOT flush medications down the toilet

  • Crush medications or dissolve them in water and then mix into an absorbent material such as cat litter, dirt or sawdust. Place the mixture into a plastic bag.

  • Medications can also be disposed of at the Drug Drop Box inside the Littleton Police Department. This is a safe and convenient way to dispose of unwanted or expired medications. Place the medications in a zip-lock 8”x10” (or smaller) bag before placing in the Drug Drop Box.

    • Location: First floor of the Littleton Center, 2255 W. Berry Avenue, in the hallway in front of Police Records Division. The box is available year-round during business hours Monday-Friday 8am-5pm (excluding holidays).
