Decoding Pet Food Terms

Decoding Pet Food Terms

When picking a pet food it is important to remember that sometimes marketing terms can be misleading.  Keep the following terms in mind when picking out food for your furry friend...

Holistic - There are currently no regulations for labeling a pet food “holistic” meaning any pet food can use this label regardless of ingredients used.

Organic - This term is not yet defined for pet food; human standards for the term are used at this time. At least 95% of the food’s content must be organic to display the organic seal.

Grain-free diets - Dogs and cats have different allergies than do humans. Most food allergies tend to be protein driven. Grains provide a nutritious carbohydrate source and most pets benefit from them.

Raw food - There is no scientific evidence that a raw food diet is better for your pet. They do cause a significant increase in risk for bacterial contamination of your pet and your household.
