Routine Veterinary Visits

Dogs and cats are very different from humans, but just like us, they require regular check-ups to stay healthy.

  1. Pets age much faster than humans do. Even an annual visit (one a year), would be like only going to the doctor once every 4-7 years for a human. A lot can change over a relatively short period.

  2. Pets hide illness. They are driven by instinct to be quite stoic, as signs of illness in a wild animal could lead to death by predation. Catching a disease early often greatly increases chances of successful treatment or management.

  3. Pets gain weight easily. The excellent foods and easy living style we are now able to offer our pets mean they can quickly put on the pounds. Unfortunately, overweight or obese pets are much more prone to heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, etc.

  4. Periodontal disease is prevalent in cats and dogs. Pets with significant dental issues often still eat normally. Consider that in human medicine, a dental exam and cleaning is typically recommended every 6 months.

  5. Prevention is better than reaction. For example, catching signs of heart disease early mean that proper management can be started to slow progression of disease. Alternatively, if heart disease is not detected early, it can develop into acute heart failure which is a serious and expensive medical emergency.
