Disaster Preparedness for your Pets

Disaster Preparedness For Your Pets

It's hard to believe but summer is just around the corner, and in Colorado this usually means Wildfires, but there are many types of Natural Disasters that can pop up.  Do you know what you need to prepare in case you are evacuated?

- Make sure vaccinations (especially Rabies) are current for all pets and that each pet has a collar with accurate identification and a current Rabies tag.

- Keep a current list detailing daily care for your pet, including type and amount of food as well as dose and administration for any medications.

- Always have a recent picture of your pet in case you become separated or he/she escapes. Try to take pictures that include both your pet and yourself to assist in proving ownership if necessary. Consider microchipping.

- Know who can take care of your pet if you have to leave town on short notice, whether this is family, friends, your veterinarian, or a boarding facility.

- Practice crating your pets, even cats. This allows fast and safe transportation.  It also makes vet visits easier for felines if the carrier is not used only once a year and always associated with vaccinations.

- If you evacuate, take your pet.
