Keep Your Pets Safe during the Holiday Season

Holiday Tips for Pets

Keep your pets away from people food.

  • Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats.

  • Xylitol, an artificial sweetener often found in baked goods, candy, and gum, can lead to liver failure and death in dogs.

  • Turkey and turkey skin can cause pancreatitis in pets.

  • Raisins, grapes, garlic, and other table scraps are poisonous to pets.

  • Yeast dough can lead to bloating and irritable bowels.

If you think your pet has eaten something toxic or poisonous, call your local veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately (or you can always call the ASPCA Poison Control Hotline at 1-888-426-4435).

Be wary of holiday decorations.

  • Christmas trees can be knocked over and ornaments (or tinsel) can result in intestinal blockage if ingested.

  • Water additives for Christmas trees can be bad for your pet if they drink the water.

  • Flowers/plants can be poisonous to your pet. Among those to avoid or keep out of reach of pets are amaryllis, mistletoe, holly, and poinsettias.

  • Candles can be knocked over resulting in a house fire.

  • Potpourris can lead to issues if ingested.

When hosting parties…

  • Make sure your pet has a safe place to escape. With nervous pets, consider giving them a quiet room with a closed door away from all of your guests.

  • Be vigilant when people are entering and exiting your home so your furry friend does not make a break for it out the door.

  • Clear away food and trash (or wrapping material from gifts) as soon as possible.
